Freedom of the Press?
Over the years there have been a variety of newspaper articles covering what would be considered newsworthy situations with regard to our organization. Although we have had our share of good and bad coverage, many have at least tried to convey our side of the many controversial issues accurately and with a minimal amount of bias while also reporting other sides of a conflict. However, with one newspaper--unfortunately the local newspaper who has the best opportunity to get to know us and the least excuse for their bad behavior--we have experienced a variety of what one would consider "negative journalism." We are referring to the Press of Atlantic City. Right off the bat, many of their articles begin with the title of "cult," which invokes visions of Charles Manson, Jim Jones, David Koresh and numerous other dangerous criminals who have led their flocks to commit acts of violence against themselves or others. Any honest examination of the teachings of our organization would clearly show that this slanderous title is completely unwarranted and is completely inappropriate. Would any one consider those israelites in the time of Moses a "cult" because YAHWEH chose a faithful individual to guide them? And what about Yahshua the Messiah who only had twelve Apostles? Would anyone consider Him a cult leader? What about the president of the united states or the pope, both of whom many people follow blindly, or should we say without question. However, to add insult to injury, this "news" agency has also found the need to manufacture and twist facts, quotes and other information with the deliberate ambition of projecting a negative impression. They seek out disgruntled ex-members for opinions whose information is never verified by other sources, nor confirmed by friends, family, employers, employees or acquaintances knowledgeable of our organization or members. After hounding us for an interview, when the Press of Atlantic City publishes their information, it is not accurate and most of it is not even from us. How ethical is that? Also when confronted with the inaccuracies, manufactured quotes and outright lies, they refuse to acknowledge or correct these deficiencies, or even to print a letter to the editor in full. Doesn’t this "freedom" and power of the press come with any moral or ethical responsibility? Does the need to sell papers outweigh the harm and libel done to the members of a religious society and an honorable man? Don’t these people care that after such a perversion of anything resembling truth that our membership had to face friends, family and acquaintances and try to correct the damage that their malicious actions have done? And what about all those who know of us only by sight or fleetingly? We can only be left to wonder what negative impression has been unjustly and maliciously implanted by a press with such an agenda. This negative opinion of us and the irresponsible, inaccurate and hurtful reporting continues to this day unhindered by conscience or ethics. What recourse do we have to defend ourselves against those who use this "freedom of the press" to hurt others of different faiths? Do we publicly refer to them using all of the negatives associated with low-life, non-ethical newspapers? If they were honest about their reporting and did not insult us and spread a hate campaign or misconstrue the truth, if we could trust them, we would give them an interview. Unfortunately they have shown themselves to be unethical, uninterested in whether what they print is factual or not, and indifferent to the effect of their articles on those whom they concern.
